Description: This charming French landscape by Pierre Neveu captures a quiet hillside village nestled among dense trees and rolling countryside. Working in expressive watercolour and ink, Neveu depicts clusters of traditional stone houses, their pale façades set against deep green woodland and a bright, expansive sky. A small church tower rises from the treetops, providing a focal point that reinforces the idyllic rural character of the scene. The artist’s handling of colour is particularly striking here: deep viridian and teal washes intermingle with lighter greens, while the sunlit fields below introduce warm ochres that balance the composition.
Neveu’s distinctive combination of loose gestural marks and precise architectural accents gives the work both spontaneity and structure. The fragmented brushstrokes used to form the foliage evoke the shifting textures of summer leaves, while the simplified outlines of the houses suggest the timeless, understated architecture found in historic French villages. The result is a work that feels fresh, atmospheric, and evocative of regional charm—perhaps inspired by the countryside of Provence, Normandy, or the Loire Valley, where Neveu produced many plein-air studies.
Trained at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Neveu later became an influential figure in French painting circles, exhibiting widely and earning the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français. His landscapes, known for their immediacy and strong compositional rhythm, continue to attract collectors seeking expressive yet serene modernist works.
Ideal for framing in living spaces, hallways, or country homes, this piece offers a beautifully balanced meditation on rural France.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount.
A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best.
Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
