Description: This expressive French hilltop village landscape is an original watercolour by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (French b. 1929). The composition centres on a sunlit stone church tower rising above clustered village rooftops, partially veiled by dense foliage and framed by dark, gestural trees. The scene evokes the character of historic villages found throughout southern France, with their warm masonry, terracotta roofs, and elevated positions overlooking the surrounding countryside.
Neveu’s confident draughtsmanship is evident in the architectural structure of the church and village buildings, rendered with fine ink lines and reinforced by layered watercolour washes. Earthy yellows and ochres contrast beautifully with deep forest greens and inky blues, while the sky opens into soft turquoise and pale blue tones, creating a vivid sense of depth and atmosphere.
