Description: This evocative French hilltop village scene by Pierre Neveu captures a sunlit winding path leading toward a group of warm terracotta-roofed houses under a clear Mediterranean sky. Neveu’s landscapes frequently explore rural France—particularly its elevated lanes, whitewashed walls, and distinct Provençal colour palette—and this composition showcases his ability to merge architectural clarity with expressive, modern watercolour handling.
The path curves gently upward from the foreground toward a bright cluster of ochre and red-tiled buildings. The soft angles of the walls and rooftops are defined with quick, confident ink strokes, giving the piece an architectural rhythm while preserving a spontaneous, plein-air feel. A charming lantern bracket on the left façade adds a touch of village character, while the right-hand slope and greenery introduce organic texture.
Neveu’s watercolour technique combines transparent washes with areas of dry-brush texture, particularly visible in the deep greens of the foliage and the warm yellow ochres of the sunlit ground. His sky is painted in luminous blues with scattered white shapes suggesting drifting clouds and bright midsummer light. Pencil underdrawing remains visible, offering insight into the artist’s process and lending immediacy to the scene.
The lower half of the sheet shows untouched paper alongside handwritten numerical pencil notes—likely colour tests or price calculations from the artist’s studio—emphasising that this was a working study captured quickly on site.
Pierre Neveu (b.1929), trained at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts, exhibited widely at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, where he won the Gold Medal in 1994. His village landscapes are highly sought after for their warmth, vitality, and strong sense of place.

Description: An atmospheric Provençal village study by French Post Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu, this work is inscribed with the location Cucuron, one of the most characterful villages in the Luberon region of Provence. Known for its medieval streets, sunlit squares and iconic terracotta tiled roofs, Cucuron has been a favourite of artists and filmmakers, celebrated for its bright Mediterranean light and distinctive architecture.
Neveu captures a narrow village street framed by whitewashed buildings whose angular shadows fall sharply across the scene. The rich cobalt blue sky and warm orange rooftops create a striking contrast, while the cool purple shadows cast by the tall façades emphasise the heat and intensity of the Provençal sun. A glimpse of a blue doorway at the centre invites the viewer deeper into the winding street, while the stone wall and balcony details add architectural texture and charm.
Executed in watercolour and gouache, the piece blends loose washes with decisive ink lines, typical of Neveu’s plein air studies. His ability to convey light, temperature, and architectural rhythm makes this a quintessential depiction of southern France.
