Description: This sunlit Provençal countryside scene is an original watercolour by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (French b. 1929), depicting a rural farmhouse nestled among rocky terrain and cultivated greenery. Inscribed “à côté des roches” (beside the rocks), the composition suggests the rugged yet pastoral landscapes of southern France, particularly regions such as Les Baux-de-Provence and the Alpilles.
The farmhouse is rendered in warm, pale stone tones with terracotta roof tiles, positioned atop a gentle rise and approached by a winding stone path. Neveu’s confident ink line defines the architecture, while loose watercolour washes describe surrounding shrubs, trees, and rocky ground with expressive freedom. Olive greens, ochres, and soft greys dominate the palette, punctuated by touches of red and deep shadow that animate the foreground vegetation.
The background hills dissolve into cool blue-green hues beneath a broad Provençal sky, creating a sense of depth and open space. As in many of Neveu’s mature landscape works, the emphasis lies on compositional balance, atmosphere, and the relationship between built form and nature rather than strict topographical detail. His academic training underpins the structure of the scene, while the relaxed handling of paint brings warmth and immediacy.
