Description: This expressive panoramic landscape by Pierre Neveu presents a dramatic view of pale, rising hills set beneath a turbulent blue and violet sky. Executed in 1980, the work exemplifies Neveu’s increasingly gestural approach to landscape, where line, movement, and atmosphere are prioritised over literal description.
The composition is built around a central sweep of white and off-white hillside forms, defined by energetic black ink lines that cut, loop, and scratch across the surface. These linear marks animate the terrain, suggesting erosion, rock, and shifting ground, while loose washes of ochre, olive green, and earthy brown establish vegetation and foreground depth. Dark, scribbled tree forms punctuate the scene, their silhouettes leaning and twisting in response to the surrounding energy of the landscape.
The sky is rendered in layered blue and grey washes, creating a sense of weather and spatial tension that presses down onto the land below.
