Description: This evocative Provençal countryside scene is an original watercolour by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (French b. 1929). The composition depicts a white stone farmhouse with terracotta roof tiles set atop a gentle hillside, approached by a warm red-ochre path that leads the eye through dense Mediterranean vegetation.
Neveu’s confident ink line articulates the architectural forms with economy, while expressive watercolour washes bring life and movement to the surrounding landscape. Olive greens, deep forest tones, and golden yellows describe shrubs and trees clustered around the building, contrasting with the earthy reds and browns of the foreground path. The sky is rendered in cool blue washes, balancing the warmth of the land below and creating a strong sense of light and atmosphere.
As in many of Neveu’s mature landscape works, detail is suggested rather than fully defined, allowing colour, rhythm, and composition to take precedence. Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
