Description: This atmospheric Provençal village landscape is an original watercolour by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (French b. 1929). The composition depicts traditional village houses partially obscured by mature plane trees in full autumn colour, a recurring and highly decorative subject within Neveu’s body of work.
Warm stone façades and terracotta roof tiles are set against a backdrop of golden foliage, rendered with expressive ink lines and layered watercolour washes. The twisting trunks and branches of the plane trees dominate the foreground, their ochre and amber leaves filling the upper portion of the composition with movement and light. Neveu balances these warm tones with cool blues in the sky and shaded architectural recesses, creating depth and visual harmony.
As in many of Neveu’s mature landscapes, architectural detail is suggested rather than fully defined, allowing colour, rhythm, and atmosphere to take precedence. The fluid handling of watercolour—where pigments bleed, pool, and overlap—brings immediacy and a strong sense of season and place, evoking the quiet warmth of a southern French autumn.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
