Description: This atmospheric French Riviera harbour scene is an original watercolour by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (French b. 1929), depicting the coastal town of Menton on the Côte d’Azur. Inscribed “Menton”, the composition captures the distinctive relationship between sea, architecture, and mountainous landscape that defines this region near the Italian border.
Neveu constructs the scene with layered washes of blue and slate grey, allowing the mountains to rise softly behind the town while the waterfront unfolds in the foreground. Palm trees, harbour structures, and low buildings with warm ochre roofs are loosely articulated with confident ink lines and fluid brushwork. Vertical elements—such as masts and architectural forms—cut through the composition, adding rhythm and depth against the expansive sky.
The colour palette is both restrained and expressive, balancing cool maritime blues with warmer yellows and sandy tones. Neveu’s handling of watercolour allows pigment to pool and overlap, enhancing atmosphere and light without overdefining detail. Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
