About the Item

Title: French Rooftop Cityscape With Chimneys Modernist Watercolor Gouache Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour and Gouache on card, unframed Size (H x W): 4.75 x 4.75 inches Condition: Good overall, Light handling marks and soft edge wear consistent with age. Some visible pencil lines and layered washes integral to the composition. No major tears or losses visible. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This expressive modernist cityscape by Pierre Neveu presents a layered rooftop view rendered in watercolor and gouache on artists paper. The composition is structured through strong geometric forms: steeply pitched roofs, vertical chimney stacks, and angular architectural planes that intersect across the picture surface. Neveu employs a restrained but distinctive palette of slate grey, muted mauve, teal blue, and warm terracotta, punctuated by vivid red-orange chimney pots that animate the skyline and draw the eye upward through the composition. Loose pencil lines remain visible beneath the washes, revealing the artist’s working method and compositional planning. These linear elements give the scene a sense of depth and rhythm, guiding the viewer through overlapping rooftops toward a darkened tree line in the distance. The buildings are suggested rather than described, allowing colour and form to carry the visual weight of the image. This balance between structure and spontaneity is a hallmark of Neveu’s post-impressionist approach. Rather than depicting a specific identifiable location, the work evokes the universal character of European urban rooftops, making it highly versatile for collectors drawn to architectural subjects, modernist cityscapes, and French works on paper. The absence of inscription allows the painting to function as an atmospheric urban study rather than a literal topographical record. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation, this work would sit comfortably within collections of mid-to-late 20th century French modernism, architectural painting, or expressive watercolor and gouache compositions.
