Description: This evocative French village street scene is an original watercolour by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (French b. 1929), depicting an architectural view in Roquebrune, a historic hilltop village in the south of France. Inscribed “Roquebrune”, the composition captures the distinctive Mediterranean character of the region, with sun-warmed façades, tiled roofs, and narrow stepped passageways.
Neveu presents a quiet street framed by tall buildings in soft shades of terracotta, blush pink, and stone grey, their surfaces animated by loose ink lines and fluid washes. A central archway and ascending steps draw the eye inward, creating depth and a strong sense of place. Architectural details—arched windows, shuttered openings, and rooflines—are suggested rather than fully defined, allowing colour and light to dominate the scene.
The palette is rich yet controlled, with deep ultramarine blues in the sky contrasting against warm ochres and oranges, while touches of green foliage soften the geometry of the buildings.
