Description: A luminous watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), inscribed Jumilhac, depicting the sunlit village and church of Jumilhac-le-Grand in the Dordogne region of southwestern France. Neveu captures the quiet charm of rural architecture with fluid, confident brushwork and a masterful command of light.
The composition leads the viewer up a terraced slope toward a whitewashed church and terracotta-roofed houses, framed by trees and the suggestion of a vineyard in late summer. Neveu’s restrained palette — ochre, sap green, and muted violet-grey — conveys both warmth and atmosphere, while the underlying graphite sketch structure gives a sense of spatial rhythm.
Trained at the École Boulle and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Neveu achieved recognition for his balance of technical discipline and painterly spontaneity, earning the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français (1994). His work distills the essence of place into simple yet evocative forms, revealing the poetry of the everyday French landscape.
Stamped “Champs Élysées par Pierre Neveu” on the reverse, this painting exemplifies Neveu’s architectural eye and lyrical sensitivity — a finely observed study of light, geometry, and rural serenity.
