About the Item

Title: French Village Rooftops Church Spire and Timber Houses Watercolor Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed Size (H x W): 9.75 x 6.25 inches Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and faint edge wear to the sheet, consistent with age. Paper surface fresh and colours bright, with no visible tears, creases or staining. Ready for mounting and framing to taste. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This expressive French village scene by Pierre Neveu captures a picturesque hillside cluster of terracotta rooftops rising toward an elegant church spire, rendered with the artist’s signature blend of loose architectural linework and translucent watercolour washes. Neveu frequently painted historic towns, medieval streets, and traditional French architecture, and this work perfectly reflects his sensitivity to form, atmosphere, and the layered character of rural settlements. The composition leads the eye upward from the narrow lane in the foreground toward a collection of timber-framed houses, their façades painted in warm creams, siennas, and soft browns. Neveu uses bold ink strokes to outline beams, shutters, and window openings, creating an energetic interplay between structure and spontaneity. The terracotta roofs, painted in rich reds and rust tones, cascade toward the centre of the image, adding rhythm and warmth. Rising above the rooftops is a luminous church spire—delicately drawn in pale grey ink and softened with light washes—suggesting a landmark typical of southern and central French villages. The sky, painted in soft blue-greens with expressive brushwork, frames the spire and enhances the vertical energy of the composition. Subtle hints of foliage in the foreground and distant tree line provide depth and balance. Visible pencil underdrawing and gestural ink marks reveal Neveu’s process, suggesting this may have been a plein-air study or preparatory work executed on location. His ability to blend draftsmanship with loose colour gives this piece a modern Post-Impressionist character, full of life and movement. Pierre Neveu (b.1929) trained at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, later exhibiting at major Paris Salons and earning the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation.
