About the Item

Title: French Village Street Scene Terracotta Rooftops Stone Houses and Green Door Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed Size (H x W): 6.25 x 9.75 inches Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and faint edge wear to the sheet, consistent with age. Paper surface fresh and colours bright, with no visible tears, creases or staining. Ready for mounting and framing to taste. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This charming French village scene by Pierre Neveu captures a quiet corner of traditional rural architecture, painted with the artist’s signature blend of loose washes and carefully placed ink drawing. Neveu was known for his atmospheric depictions of provincial towns and countryside villages across France, often focusing on the interplay between old stone buildings, terracotta rooftops, and the shifting southern light. The composition presents a cluster of houses with warm red and orange tiled roofs overlapping at varied angles, creating depth and a sense of lived-in character. The central building, with its shuttered windows and soft grey stonework, anchors the scene. To the right, a tall house with pale walls features a striking green door, a focal point that adds both contrast and charm. Hints of foliage in dark greens and inky blacks suggest a shaded courtyard or garden just outside the frame. Neveu’s watercolour handling is fluid and expressive: transparent washes form the sky’s cool greys and blues, while richer reds and browns give weight to the tiled roofs. His ink lines—sometimes crisp, sometimes barely visible—define window shutters, stone textures, and architectural edges without overpowering the softness of the medium. Pencil underdrawing remains visible in places, offering a glimpse into his working process and adding a sense of immediacy. Pierre Neveu (b.1929), a distinguished Post-Impressionist painter, studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work was widely exhibited, including at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, where he received the prestigious Gold Medal in 1994. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation.
