Description: This sunlit French village scene is an original watercolour by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (French b. 1929), depicting a quiet street in the village of Villars, located in the Provençal region of southern France. Inscribed “Villars”, the work captures the distinctive architectural character and calm atmosphere of rural French village life.
Neveu presents a grouping of whitewashed stone houses with terracotta tiled roofs, punctuated by tall, slender cypress trees that rise through the centre of the composition. The buildings are defined with confident ink line, while fluid watercolour washes introduce warmth, light, and texture. Pale ochres, soft greys, and creamy whites dominate the façades, complemented by muted blues in the shutters and sky, creating a harmonious balance of warm and cool tones.
The composition draws the viewer into the village through a gently receding street, with subtle shadows and architectural overlaps suggesting depth and scale. As in many of Neveu’s mature works, detail is selectively simplified, allowing atmosphere, rhythm, and colour harmony to take precedence over strict realism. His academic training is evident in the sound structure of the scene, while the expressive handling of watercolour lends immediacy and charm.
