Description: This tranquil Provençal hillside scene is an original watercolour by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (French b. 1929), depicting a rural farmhouse overlooking the surrounding countryside near the village of Villars in southern France. Inscribed “Villars”, the work captures the open space, light, and architectural simplicity characteristic of the region.
At the centre of the composition stands a pale stone farmhouse with a pitched roof, flanked by tall, slender cypress trees that rise against a wide blue sky. A gently sloping path leads the viewer toward the building, bordered by low stone walls and patches of green vegetation rendered with loose, expressive washes. Beyond, rolling hills dissolve into layered blue and slate tones, creating depth and a strong sense of distance.
Neveu’s confident ink line anchors the architecture, while fluid watercolour washes bring softness and atmosphere to the scene. Earthy ochres, muted greens, and cool blues are balanced with restraint, allowing light and composition to take precedence over detailed description. This approach is typical of Neveu’s mature landscape work, where structure and mood are carefully harmonised.
