Signed: Signed lower right “P. Neveu,” titled lower left “Gorbio” in the artist’s hand
Condition: Good overall. Pigments remain vibrant with subtle patina to the paper edges. A graphite compositional grid is faintly visible beneath the surface, characteristic of Neveu’s working method.
Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: A captivating study of Gorbio, a historic hilltop village overlooking the Mediterranean near Menton, painted by Pierre Neveu (b.1929). Bathed in warm Provençal light, the painting captures the harmony between architecture and landscape — the pale stone walls of the village rising above terraces of olive trees and cypresses, framed by the deep blues of the mountains and sea beyond.
Neveu’s expressive brushwork and transparent washes evoke the sun-drenched textures and rhythm of southern France. In the foreground, gestural strokes suggest the twisting trunks of pines, their dark silhouettes anchoring the composition. The cool turquoise sky and soft violet shadows lend a serene balance to the warm ochres of the hillside.
This piece exemplifies Neveu’s architectural precision combined with a painter’s spontaneity — a synthesis developed through his training at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Later appointed Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris, Neveu exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, where he served as President of the painting section.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
