About the Item

Title: Gorbio Provence Village Steps Colourful Houses Hilltop Street Scene Landscape Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size (H x W): 8.5 x 6.25 inches Inscribed “Gorbio” lower right Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and minor natural toning consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This vibrant watercolour by French Post Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu captures the charm of Gorbio, a hilltop village near Menton known for its steep lanes, pastel façades and dramatic Mediterranean backdrop. Neveu’s composition leads the viewer down a sloping stone pathway flanked by colourful buildings in warm shades of yellow, pink and terracotta, their surfaces catching strong southern light. The artist layers loose washes with quick linear pencil work, leaving underlying sketch marks visible and giving the painting a lively, spontaneous character. The deep shadows beneath the archway create a powerful contrast with the sunlit architecture, drawing attention to the tight, winding nature of the village streets. Above the rooftops, the cool blues and deep greens of the surrounding hills rise sharply, situating the scene in the rugged landscape of the Alpes-Maritimes. Neveu’s economical brushwork allows the textures of stairs, foliage and façades to emerge without over-definition, evoking the immediacy of plein-air observation. Gorbio’s distinctive atmosphere—its narrow passageways, irregular stone steps and jewel-toned houses—is a recurring subject among artists working in the south of France. This piece is an excellent example of Neveu’s ability to capture light, colour and structure with efficiency and flair. Ideal for collectors of Provençal landscapes, Mediterranean architecture and expressive French watercolour sketches, this work offers both decorative appeal and a strong sense of place.
