Description: An exceptional watercolour study of Grasse, the famed Provençal town celebrated for its perfumes, painted by Pierre Neveu (b.1929). This intimate street scene captures the quiet rhythm of sunlit façades and shadowed alleys under a crystalline southern sky. Terracotta roofs and green shutters rise in irregular planes, bathed in the soft radiance of afternoon light.
Neveu’s structural training is evident in the assured perspective and geometric harmony of the composition, while his fluid handling of wash and line lends the work its immediacy and vitality. The balance of ochres, umbers, and soft greys against the vivid blue of the sky evokes both architectural solidity and transience — a fleeting impression of heat, colour, and silence.
Stamped “Champs Élysées par Pierre Neveu”, this piece comes from the artist’s personal studio collection. A graduate of the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Neveu later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and was awarded the Gold Medal of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994.
This beautifully observed study exemplifies Neveu’s mastery of Mediterranean architecture and light — a quietly captivating work that distils the timeless charm of Provence into fluid line and colour.

Pierre Neveu
Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
