Description: A captivating French harbour scene by Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (b.1929), this vibrant watercolour and gouache captures the coastal charm of La Trinité-sur-Mer, a renowned sailing town in southern Brittany. Bathed in luminous blue tones, the composition depicts a line of whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs reflected in the still water of the harbour, where moored boats rest at anchor under the calm afternoon light. Neveu’s assured brushwork and economy of line convey both architectural precision and a sense of atmospheric stillness.
La Trinité-sur-Mer has long been celebrated for its nautical heritage, regattas, and tranquil estuary vistas—subjects that appealed deeply to Neveu’s compositional sensibilities. Here, his layered washes of ultramarine and turquoise evoke the play of light across the water’s surface, while gestural strokes suggest masts, sails, and reflections in motion. The white facades of the harbour town emerge from deep blues and greens, creating a striking balance between solidity and transparency.
Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and the National School of Fine Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. A frequent exhibitor at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, he was awarded the Gold Medal in 1994. This work, acquired directly from his studio estate, exemplifies Neveu’s signature ability to fuse structural clarity with painterly freedom. Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
