Description: This lively harbour study captures the distinctive atmosphere of Dieppe, one of Normandy’s most historic and characterful port towns. Although the inscription reads “Dieffe,” the style and subject matter strongly suggest Dieppe—famed for its working fishing harbour, colourful boats, and ever-shifting coastal light. The artist focuses on the rhythm and geometry of the quayside: moored vessels overlap in tight formation, their hulls picked out in fresh greens, whites and blues, while masts rise sharply against a soft, purplish sky. Subtle washes of mauve, grey, and sea-green interact with loose, expressive ink lines, giving the scene both clarity and movement.
Across the harbour wall, hints of cranes, warehouses, and industrial silhouettes place the composition firmly within a working port rather than a purely picturesque view. The reflections are handled with delicate restraint—thin, transparent layers suggest gentle ripples, while the boats’ dark undersides anchor the composition. This work is typical of mid- to late-20th-century French plein-air practice, where rapid, confident mark-making captures the light and atmosphere of a specific moment rather than fine detail.
