Description: This elegant French harbour scene by Pierre Neveu (b.1929) captures the sunlit charm of Cassis, a celebrated fishing port on the Côte d’Azur known for its pastel-coloured houses, Mediterranean light, and dramatic limestone cliffs. Executed in watercolour and gouache, the painting portrays a lively quayside filled with figures strolling, chatting, and relaxing beneath parasols beside the glittering harbour. Boats rest gently in the marina, their reflections rippling across the calm surface of the water.
Neveu’s confident draughtsmanship and masterful use of composition lend the scene both structure and atmosphere. His palette of sapphire blue, ochre, and soft grey mirrors the sun-bleached tones of southern France, while gestural brushwork evokes the warmth of a Provençal afternoon. The artist’s fine sense of rhythm and perspective leads the viewer through the composition—from the shaded café in the foreground to the hillside village rising in the distance.
Cassis, long admired by painters including Derain, Signac, and Dufy, has been a favourite subject for French artists seeking to capture the balance between working harbour life and idyllic leisure. Neveu’s interpretation of the town combines modernist clarity with post-impressionist vitality, offering a distinctly mid-century vision of the Mediterranean coast.
Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and the National School of Fine Arts in Paris and became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. A Gold Medal recipient at the Salon des Artistes Français (1994), he is renowned for his vibrant depictions of French life and landscape. This work, sourced directly from the artist’s estate, exemplifies his refined and atmospheric style.
