About the Item

Title: Harbour Street Scene Brittany Coastal Village French Modernist Watercolour Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size (H x W): 8.5 x 6.75 inches Condition: Good overall. Vibrant colour and clear definition with slight surface wear consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: A lively and atmospheric French modernist harbour scene by Pierre Neveu (French, b. 1929), depicting a narrow cobbled street descending toward a sunlit quay lined with moored boats. Beyond the arching rooftops and stone façades, glimmers of turquoise water and bright white buildings capture the charm of a Breton coastal village, possibly in northern France. Neveu’s distinctive handling of watercolour and line brings vitality and structure to this composition. Angular architectural forms are softened by expressive brushwork, while the subtle play of shadow and reflected light evokes the rhythm of daily life by the sea. The palette—rich in blues, greens, and golden ochres—conveys both the cool freshness of maritime air and the warmth of sunlit stone. A solitary figure in the foreground adds a quiet narrative note, grounding the viewer within the scene. Trained at the École Boulle in Paris and later Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris, Neveu is celebrated for merging classical draftsmanship with the immediacy of modernist expression. His paintings often depict France’s architectural and natural beauty through fluid gesture and carefully observed colour harmonies. An exceptional example of 20th-century French watercolour painting, ideal for collectors of Brittany coastal art, French modernist urban scenes, and Post-Impressionist landscapes.
