Description: In Harpist and Flautist Performing, Pierre Neveu (b.1929) captures the poise and elegance of a live orchestral performance with characteristic sensitivity. The scene focuses on two musicians mid-recital — a harpist and a flautist — surrounded by the soft presence of accompanying figures in the background.
The interplay of cool grey tones, muted violets, and deep blacks against a warm red floor imbues the painting with a sense of theatre and atmosphere. Neveu’s confident linework defines movement with remarkable economy: the gentle bend of the flautist, the light tension of the harp strings, and the quiet rhythm of the ensemble beyond.
Educated at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts, Neveu went on to become Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and President of the Painting Section at the Salon des Artistes Français. His musicians are not idealised but observed — rendered with empathy, rhythm, and the eye of a draughtsman deeply attuned to composition and gesture.

Pierre Neveu
Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
