Description: An expressive and atmospheric depiction of a southern French hilltop village, rendered with deft watercolour washes by Pierre Neveu (b.1929). The composition centres on a tall church tower rising above a tapestry of terracotta rooftops, bathed in warm Mediterranean light and framed by scattered greenery and open sky.
Neveu’s assured technique — part architectural precision, part painterly freedom — captures the rhythm and charm of rural Provence or the Côte d’Azur hinterland. His colour palette, dominated by siennas, olives, and cool blues, evokes the shifting tones of a late afternoon sun over stone villages typical of the region.
Loose brushwork in the sky and foreground hints at the artist’s plein air approach, likely working on-site to seize the fleeting balance of shadow and light. This immediacy gives the scene its vivid sense of place: tranquil yet alive with heat and atmosphere.
Educated at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Pierre Neveu became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited at both the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, where he later served as President of the painting section. His work reflects a lifelong fascination with the harmony between architecture and nature.
Unframed and ready for mounting, French Hilltop Village with Church Tower and Red Tiled Roofs is a superb example of Neveu’s confident use of light and structure — a poetic snapshot of the rural South rendered with elegant simplicity.
