Description: An exquisite depiction of the hilltop village of Peillon, a perched commune in the Alpes-Maritimes region of Provence, painted by Pierre Neveu (b.1929). The work captures the drama and luminosity of this ancient fortified village, nestled against steep mountain slopes and surrounded by cypress and olive trees.
Neveu’s handling of watercolour is masterful — the warm ochre tones of the clustered houses contrast beautifully with the deep greens and indigos of the surrounding landscape. The composition rises rhythmically toward the church tower at the summit, while transparent washes and spontaneous brushwork convey both the solidity of stone and the transient shimmer of Mediterranean light.
This piece exemplifies Neveu’s deep appreciation for architectural harmony within nature, a theme central to his oeuvre. His confident draughtsmanship, inherited from his architectural training, pairs with a painter’s sensitivity to light and atmosphere — resulting in a work that feels both spontaneous and structurally grounded.
A graduate of the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Neveu became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited widely at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, where he later served as President of the painting section. His work continues to be celebrated for its lyrical evocations of southern France and its balance of discipline and freedom.
Unframed and ready for presentation, Hilltop Village of Peillon in the Alpes-Maritimes is a radiant example of Neveu’s plein air approach and his gift for translating the poetry of Provence’s landscapes into enduring, atmospheric compositions.
