About the Item
Title: Hilltop Village White Houses Terracotta Roofs Olive Trees Watercolour Study
Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929)
Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed
Size (H x W): 7 x 9.25 inches
Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and minor natural toning consistent with age.
Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: This lively watercolour by Pierre Neveu captures a classic Provençal hilltop village, with its whitewashed houses, terracotta rooflines, and layers of sunlit architecture rising towards the church tower at the summit. Neveu’s energetic brushwork and expressive ink outlines give the composition a sense of immediacy, as though painted rapidly on location in shifting light conditions.
The dramatic blue sky is one of the defining features of the piece. Neveu lays down sweeping washes of cerulean, cobalt, and violet, creating an atmospheric backdrop that contrasts strongly with the pale façades of the village. The interplay between deep shadows and bright highlights suggests late afternoon light, catching the angled rooftops and illuminating the scrubby vegetation below.
In the middle ground, loosely rendered olive trees and shrubs anchor the village to its landscape. Neveu’s ink marks — quick, searching, and slightly irregular — provide structure without ever feeling rigid, allowing the colour to remain the driving force of the image. His greens shift from cool blue-greys to warm sap tones, giving depth to the hillside while maintaining an expressive, painterly softness.
The lower portion of the composition remains intentionally open, with gestural strokes indicating pathways, scrub, and dry earth. This breathing space enhances the vertical pull of the village above, reinforcing the sense of climbing towards a fortified medieval centre — typical of many towns in southern France.
A vibrant and atmospheric study, characteristic of Neveu’s plein-air practice and appealing to collectors of French regional landscapes.
