Description: A luminous original watercolor and gouache harbour scene by French Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu, this work depicts an atmospheric Italian lakeside marina at the edge of a village. A row of small fishing and pleasure boats is pulled up in the foreground, their hulls rendered in fresh strokes of teal, crimson and deep navy. Beyond the jetties the calm turquoise lake stretches out towards misty blue mountains, layered in soft washes that capture distance, haze and late afternoon light. To the right an ochre yellow villa and dark cypress trees frame the view, evoking the romantic architecture and distinctive silhouettes of the Italian lakes.
Neveu’s confident line drawing and vibrant colour sense give the composition a modern, graphic energy while still remaining faithful to the tranquillity of the scene. The quick, economical marks describing masts, mooring posts and reflections convey the bustle of a working waterfront without losing the relaxed holiday atmosphere. Collectors of Mediterranean landscape paintings, harbour views and mid-century European watercolours will find this an especially appealing piece.
Like many of Pierre Neveu’s works, the painting demonstrates his training at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he honed his strong sense of structure and design. His ability to combine disciplined drawing with expressive washes of colour has made his landscapes and architectural views highly sought after among lovers of French Post-Impressionism and travel-inspired art.
