Description: A lyrical and luminous French landscape watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), inscribed de la Ferme des Arbres (“from the Farm of Trees”). The composition depicts a quiet rural farmstead enclosed by whitewashed walls and shaded by mature trees, their dense foliage rendered in layered greens, blues, and violets. A single cart wheel leans against the stone building to the right, suggesting the quiet industry of agricultural life, while the open courtyard and sweeping blue sky convey a sense of stillness and light.
Neveu’s watercolour technique combines architectural precision with a free, expressive touch. His confident use of negative space gives structure to the buildings, while his gestural brushwork evokes the fleeting play of sunlight across stone and leaves. The result is both delicate and dynamic — a hallmark of Neveu’s distinctive mid-century approach to plein-air landscape painting.
Born in 1929, Pierre Neveu studied at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, later becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. A regular exhibitor at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, he received the Gold Medal in 1994.
