Description: A charming plein air watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929) depicting the quiet village of La Roche d’Ougla, rendered with the artist’s signature blend of precision and spontaneity. The composition leads the viewer up a sunlit path toward the clustered rooftops and warm ochre tones of the village, crowned by a slender church tower that rises gracefully against a luminous Provençal sky.
Neveu’s brushwork captures both architectural rhythm and atmospheric ease — soft washes describe light and shadow across the facades, while brisk linework gives structure and movement. His use of blues, greens, and terracotta tones reflects the Mediterranean light characteristic of southern France.
Executed on perforated sketchbook paper, this piece was likely painted en plein air, directly observing the scene. Its immediacy and freshness embody Neveu’s mastery of capturing fleeting light and space.
Trained at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Neveu served as Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited widely at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, later becoming President of the painting section. His landscapes, often celebrating French rural and coastal scenes, are admired for their clarity, warmth, and balance.
Unframed and intimate, La Roche d’Ougla Village Street and Church offers a poetic glimpse into the sunlit tranquillity of the French countryside — a timeless example of Neveu’s confident, lyrical hand.
