Description: A beautifully composed French coastal watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), titled Le Pontreau. The painting captures a calm maritime scene featuring traditional wooden fishing huts — known as carrelets — standing above the tide on stilts, with a line of cottages and distant trees completing the horizon. This elegant composition conveys the quiet rhythm of rural life along the French Atlantic coast.
Neveu’s brushwork is light and spontaneous, blending translucent washes of blue and green with crisp ink outlines that define the structures and landscape. The interplay between the soft sky and verdant foreground demonstrates his ability to translate architectural precision into painterly lyricism. Framed naturally by foliage, the view draws the eye across the landscape toward the open sea, evoking both stillness and space.
Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited widely at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, receiving the Gold Medal in 1994. His works capture a quintessentially French sense of place — structured yet romantic, modern yet timeless.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
