Description: A radiant French coastal landscape by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), this original watercolour and gouache depicts the lighthouse at Menton, one of the most picturesque towns on the French Riviera. Set against the glistening Mediterranean Sea, the scene is framed by two elegant trees whose branches filter the sunlight and guide the eye toward the whitewashed lighthouse with its distinctive red lantern. The mountainous coastline rises softly in the distance, its violet and blue tones contrasting beautifully with the turquoise water and warm terracotta roof of the building below.
Neveu’s refined draftsmanship and lyrical handling of gouache capture the unique brilliance of the Côte d’Azur. His fluid brushstrokes and layered washes evoke the play of light and shade through the foliage, creating a composition that feels at once serene and alive. The artist’s use of negative space and tonal precision lends depth and atmosphere, while the rhythmic tree trunks introduce a sense of movement that draws the viewer into the scene.
Menton, often referred to as The Pearl of France, has long inspired artists for its golden light and Italianate charm, positioned between Monaco and the Italian border. Neveu’s interpretation blends modernist clarity with poetic sensitivity, distilling the timeless beauty of the Riviera coastline into a work of luminous simplicity.
Trained at the École Boulle and the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, Neveu became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and received the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994. This piece, sourced directly from the artist’s estate, exemplifies his mastery of French coastal subjects and mid-century composition.
