About the Item

Title: Luberon Hillside View Lacostec French Landscape Rooftops Trees and Blue Sky Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Inscribed “Lacostec” in the artist’s hand (lower right) Size (H x W): 8.5 x 6.25 inches Condition: Good overall, Light handling marks, a small blue paint drop on the lower sheet, and a tiny patch of brown pigment on the left edge. Some small pencil sketches at the bottom are original to the artist’s process. Colours remain vibrant. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This vibrant watercolor by Pierre Neveu presents a sweeping hillside view looking toward the Luberon, inscribed by the artist as “Lacostec.” This refers to Lacoste, one of the most atmospheric villages in the Provence region, known for its terracotta rooftops, steep cobbled paths, and the dramatic silhouette of its medieval château. Neveu captures the essence of this landscape with expressive, light-filled brushwork, focusing on the interplay of colour, texture, and Mediterranean heat. In the foreground, bold splashes of deep greens, warm ochres, violets, and rust tones evoke dense vegetation and sunlit rooftops. Neveu’s loose ink drawing underpins the composition, giving just enough architectural clarity without sacrificing spontaneity. The terracotta roofs are rendered with energetic strokes, while the surrounding foliage dissolves into layered, impressionistic marks typical of Neveu’s plein-air studies. The upper half of the composition opens into a vast Provençal sky, painted in cool horizontal washes of blue. This contrast between structured rooftops and a luminous horizon creates depth and a sense of calm expansiveness. At the bottom of the sheet, the artist has included a small pencil sketch—likely a preparatory notation—as well as a single dropped mark of blue pigment, both characteristic of his working method during on-site studies. This piece exemplifies Pierre Neveu’s ability to convey mood rather than strict detail, offering collectors an intimate and atmospheric view of the Luberon. Ideal for lovers of French landscape painting and contemporary Provençal scenes. Unframed and ready for customised presentation.
