Description: This masterful watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929) captures the charm of a sunlit village street in southwest France, likely one of the region’s medieval bastide towns. The composition is built around the interplay of half-timbered façades and ochre stone walls, their geometry softened by expressive washes and Neveu’s confident line. The cobalt-blue sky glows with Mediterranean intensity, heightening the contrast between light and shadow that animates the scene.
Neveu’s architectural precision is evident throughout: the perspective is keenly observed yet effortlessly handled, allowing the work to breathe with spontaneity. Figures hinted at in quick gestures bring the composition to life without disturbing its stillness. Stamped “Champs Élysées par Pierre Neveu”, this piece originates from the artist’s own studio collection. A graduate of the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Neveu later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris, and was awarded the Gold Medal of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
