Description: A luminous and graphic Mediterranean harbour scene by Pierre Neveu (French, b. 1929), depicting a row of moored fishing boats floating on turquoise water beneath a bright summer sky. Executed in watercolour and felt pen, the composition captures both the serenity and rhythm of harbour life. The colourful boats — rendered in vivid blues, greens, and lilacs — reflect Neveu’s confident draughtsmanship and modernist sensibility.
The piece demonstrates Neveu’s ability to unite bold linear precision with fluid transparency. The angular outlines, likely drawn in felt pen, provide a clear architectural structure, while the watercolour washes introduce luminosity and depth. Across the horizon, pale violet and peach tones suggest the haze of distant coastal buildings, evoking locations such as Antibes or Cassis in the south of France.
Pierre Neveu, trained at the École Boulle and later Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris, was known for transforming everyday French scenes into harmonies of line, colour, and light. His maritime works, though few, display a sense of compositional balance and calm that recalls mid-century design and the optimistic clarity of the post-war period.
An elegant and vibrant example of 20th-century French modernist watercolour, ideal for collectors of Mediterranean landscapes, coastal art, or expressive maritime scenes.

Title: Beached Fishing Boats on Mediterranean Shore Coastal Watercolour by Pierre Neveu
Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929)
Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed
Size (H x W): 8.75 x 6 inches
Condition: good overall; clean surface and bright palette with minimal handling marks.
Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: In this exquisite Mediterranean harbour scene, Pierre Neveu captures a row of fishing boats resting on the sun-bleached shore — their hulls painted in vivid blues, yellows, and reds, glowing against the white sand and turquoise sea beyond. The composition balances stillness and vitality: the boats lie quietly in the midday heat, yet every line and shadow suggests movement, texture, and light.
Neveu’s masterful handling of watercolour transparency lends the work its distinctive luminosity. Cool washes of aquamarine and indigo melt into warm ochres and siennas, evoking the sharp coastal light of the French Riviera or southern Italy. The artist’s loose, confident brushstrokes and layered perspective show both precision and spontaneity — hallmarks of his plein-air approach.
The painting embodies Neveu’s fascination with everyday maritime life, transforming the humble working boats of the Mediterranean into studies of rhythm, geometry, and colour harmony. There is an intimacy here — a sense of the artist pausing mid-journey, quietly observing the relationship between land, sea, and human craft.
This is a quintessential Neveu composition: joyful yet restrained, rooted in observation yet lifted by artistic freedom. A perfect choice for collectors of vintage coastal paintings...

Boats and the sea Watercolor painting Blue sea Summer painting Sea port
Located in Zofingen, AG
A watercolor painting with a southern summer landscape with boats - saturated blue colors of water, coastal greenery and white boats near the shore. The painting with boats and the sea is based on memories of a trip to St. Nicholas Island, Crete. The rich, but at the same time calm color of the painting with boats will bring the warmth of a summer day into the room and give a calming mood. This painting with boats and the sea is made on magnificent cotton paper with light-resistant paints of world manufacturers.
Watercolor painting the sea port will perfectly complement any interior. Light watercolor painting with boats in the port will look good in the living room, bedroom or kitchen. Painting with the sea and boats will also be a wonderful gift to friends and family for any celebration.
