Description: This evocative Mediterranean landscape by Pierre Neveu captures the charm and warmth of a hillside village bathed in sunlight, surrounded by cypress trees, terraced greenery and ochre-coloured buildings. Working in watercolour and gouache, Neveu layers loose washes with expressive ink-like linework, creating a composition that feels both spontaneous and structurally assured. The artist’s subtle shifts between warm yellows, cool greys and deep greens evoke the textures of stone walls, shaded gardens and sunlit slopes typical of villages found across Provence, Languedoc or the southern Rhône Valley.
The houses—stacked closely together with balconies, shuttered windows and terracotta roofs—rise gently through the centre of the composition. Behind them, distinctive vertical silhouettes of Mediterranean cypress trees punctuate the blue sky, adding rhythm and height to the scene. In the foreground, soft green washes blend into darker vegetation, suggesting a sloping garden or meadow at the foot of the hill. Neveu’s use of negative space and quick gestural marks gives the painting an airy, impressionistic atmosphere while still preserving a strong sense of place.
Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. His work is celebrated for its vibrant palette, structural sensitivity and ability to capture the character of French and Mediterranean landscapes. Exhibited at major French salons, Neveu remains a highly collected post-Impressionist painter.
This work is ideal for collectors of Mediterranean landscapes, French village scenes or expressive modern watercolours, offering an uplifting sense of light, colour and place.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount.
A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best.
Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
