About the Item

Title: Mediterranean Hilltop Village Houses Trees and Summer Sky Watercolor Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed Size (H x W): 6.25 x 9.75 inches Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and faint edge wear to the sheet, consistent with age. Paper surface fresh and colours bright, with no visible tears, creases or staining. Ready for mounting and framing to taste. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This luminous village landscape by Pierre Neveu captures a sun drenched Mediterranean hilltop settlement clustered beneath a wide blue sky. A row of tall houses steps across the composition in warm ochres and soft creams, their terracotta tiled roofs catching the light. Darker window openings and small balconies create a rhythmic pattern across the facades, while a church tower rises at the left edge, suggesting the timeless character of a rural French village. In the foreground, loose grasses and scrub are rendered in swift vertical strokes of ochre, umber and grey laid over deep blue and green shadows. These gestural marks give the sense of looking up at the village from a lower path, as if the viewer has paused mid walk to take in the scene. Blocks of foliage at the base of the buildings anchor the composition and echo the cool greens found in a single shuttered window, drawing the eye back into the painting. Neveu combines lively ink drawing with transparent watercolor washes, allowing the texture of the paper to sparkle through. His handling of colour and line sits firmly in the Post Impressionist tradition, balancing structure with spontaneity. Perfect for collectors of Mediterranean village scenes, French landscape painting and modern rustic interiors, this original watercolor offers an evocative glimpse of southern light and architecture. Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, later becoming a Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited widely, including at the Salon dAutomne and the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded the Gold Medal in 1994.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
