About the Item
Title: Mediterranean Hilltop Village Olive Groves and Fields Watercolour Study
Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929)
Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed
Size (H x W): 6.25 x 9.75 inches
Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and minor natural toning consistent with age.
Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: This lively plein-air watercolour by Pierre Neveu captures the characteristic charm of a Mediterranean hilltop village, set against a patchwork of olive groves, vineyards, and sun-warmed fields. Painted with loose, confident brushwork, the piece conveys both the immediacy of on-site observation and Neveu’s signature economy of mark-making.
The village itself is rendered in soft whites and warm ochres, its rooftops just visible above a dense band of trees that separates the architecture from the surrounding countryside. Neveu’s handling of the landscape is particularly expressive here: lush greens flow into one another, punctuated by darker, structured forms that suggest cypress trees, orchard rows, and cultivated plots.
In the foreground, broad strokes of terracotta and sienna hint at dry earth and late-summer vegetation, adding warmth and depth to the composition. The sky, painted in a delicate wash of blue and violet, enhances the sense of atmosphere without dominating the scene.
Throughout the work, Neveu balances spontaneity with clarity. His brushwork conveys movement and shifting light, while the overall structure of the landscape remains coherent and recognisable. The result is an evocative study of Mediterranean rural life — not a literal depiction, but a distilled impression of colour, climate, and rhythm.
Ideal for collectors of European travel painting, expressive modern watercolour, and landscape studies that capture place through gesture and mood rather than strict detail.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount.
A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best.
Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
