Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and faint edge wear to the sheet, consistent with age. Colours remain fresh and luminous, with no visible tears, losses or major stains.
Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: This intimate village street scene by French Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu captures the warm light and architectural charm of Castellar, a historic hilltop village above Menton in the South of France.
Seen through a stone archway, the view opens onto sunlit ochre and terracotta façades, their shuttered windows and trailing greenery framing a narrow passage that invites the eye deeper into the composition. A hanging lantern and patterned stonework emphasise the medieval character of the village, while the brilliant cobalt sky beyond the arch provides a striking contrast to the earthy walls.
Neveu’s confident pen line underpins the scene, giving a gentle architectural rigour to the vaulted arch, window surrounds and cobbled ground. Over this structure he layers transparent washes of watercolour, allowing the texture of the paper to suggest the patina of old plaster and worn stone. The balance of cool shadow under the arch with hot sunlight on the far wall exemplifies his sensitivity to Mediterranean light and atmosphere.
Pierre Neveu trained in Paris at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris, later exhibiting at major French salons and receiving significant recognition for his luminous landscapes.
Collectors of Provençal village scenes, architectural watercolours and mid-20th-century French Post-Impressionism will find this work a particularly charming example – a ready-made window onto a quiet corner of Castellar, perfect for framing in a hallway, kitchen or sunlit living space.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
