Description: An atmospheric Mediterranean village scene by French Post Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu, this original watercolour and gouache study captures terracotta rooftops, church towers and lush green trees under a bright summer sky. Neveu arranges the composition around a cluster of sunlit houses with warm tiled roofs, their façades broken by deep windows and shaded doorways. A tall streetlamp, textured garden wall and dense foliage in the foreground lead the eye into the picture, suggesting a quiet village square or garden on the edge of a historic town. Loose washes of blue and grey animate the sky, while vigorous dark brushmarks describe pines and shrubs, evoking the light and atmosphere of southern France or an Italian hilltop village.
Neveu trained at the École Boulle in Paris before continuing at the École des Beaux Arts and the studio of Maurice Brianchon, later becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. His work is celebrated for its strong sense of structure, vibrant palette and lyrical treatment of landscape and architecture. This intimate village painting displays those qualities beautifully, balancing quick gestural marks with a carefully observed sense of place.
Perfect for collectors of French watercolours, Mediterranean village landscapes or architectural street scenes, this original work would sit well in a coastal or country interior and is ready to frame to suit your space.
