Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: A radiant and skilfully composed depiction of Menton, the “Pearl of the French Riviera,” painted in fluid watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929). Set against the intense cobalt blue of the Mediterranean sky, the composition captures the town’s distinctive ochre facades, elegant bell towers, and sunlit palm-lined promenade.
Neveu’s brushwork balances architectural precision with painterly spontaneity — the sun-warmed walls and shadowed palms are suggested with confident, minimal strokes. The interplay of deep ultramarine and golden sienna creates a harmonious contrast evocative of the Côte d’Azur’s unique atmosphere and coastal light.
The central tower likely represents Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange, a hallmark of Menton’s skyline, overlooking the historic Old Town and gardens below. This work distils the region’s timeless elegance, reflecting both Neveu’s architectural training and his sensitivity to natural colour and rhythm.
Pierre Neveu studied at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. His works were exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, where he later served as President of the painting section.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
