Description: A luminous and architecturally balanced study by Pierre Neveu depicting the lighthouse and sea wall at Menton, on the French Riviera. Painted with expressive washes of ultramarine, ochre, and violet-grey, this work captures the dramatic interplay of mountain, sea, and coastal structure unique to this border town between France and Italy.
Neveu’s composition demonstrates his characteristic understanding of design and rhythm — the red-topped lighthouse provides a vertical accent against the diagonal sweep of the promenade, while transparent layers of gouache and watercolour describe shifting light across the bay. The artist’s confident, gestural mark-making evokes the immediacy of plein-air observation and the cool brilliance of Mediterranean light.
