Description: A tranquil and beautifully balanced French coastal watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), this work is inscribed Mindin — referring to the small maritime hamlet near Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, on the Loire estuary opposite Saint-Nazaire in western France. The composition captures a peaceful low-tide scene with a single fishing boat resting on the sandy foreshore, and traditional carrelet fishing huts on wooden stilts extending across the horizon. These distinctive structures, unique to the French Atlantic coast, have long been celebrated as symbols of local craftsmanship and coastal heritage.
Neveu’s deft handling of watercolour and ink brings subtle life to the scene: the fine architectural lines of the huts contrast with loose washes of blue, ochre, and grey that evoke the hazy light of an estuary afternoon. His painterly restraint and compositional clarity reveal his training as both a draughtsman and colourist, allowing structure and spontaneity to coexist in delicate harmony.
Pierre Neveu studied at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, later becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. A regular exhibitor at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, he received the Gold Medal in 1994.
