Description: This elegant watercolour and ink study by Pierre Neveu depicts the historic village of Mortemart, considered one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France. Using his signature combination of loose pen line and translucent washes, Neveu captures the charm and quiet rhythm of this medieval settlement.
The composition is led by a sweeping stone wall in the foreground, its warm grey tones and irregular blocks rendered with quick, confident strokes. This curved wall guides the viewer’s eye towards the cluster of rooftops and the distinctive church tower rising at the centre of the composition. Neveu’s handling of architectural detail is characteristically restrained—suggestive rather than literal—allowing the texture of the paper and the spontaneity of the linework to carry much of the atmosphere.
Soft blues and greys define the rooftops and shaded areas, contrasted by touches of warm ochre where the sunlight reaches the upper houses. Behind this, a row of trees frames the skyline, their foliage formed with loose wet-on-wet washes that anchor the composition while keeping it airy and bright. The sky above shifts from pale morning blue to deeper tones, evoking a clear, settled summer day in rural France.
The open space in the lower foreground, intentionally underworked, creates a sense of stillness and enhances the impression of stepping into a quiet, sunlit lane. Neveu’s ability to balance detail with freedom of mark-making makes this a particularly graceful study—ideal for collectors of French landscapes, village scenes, and mid-century plein-air work.
