Description: This luminous plein air study by Pierre Neveu (b.1929) captures the medieval village of Najac in southwest France, dominated by its iconic hilltop fortress. Neveu distils the essence of the scene through his characteristic balance of clarity and spontaneity — rooftops rendered in warm ochre and violet tones rise towards the distant silhouette of the Château de Najac, set against a vast blue sky.
The composition combines geometric rhythm with atmospheric looseness, suggesting both architectural order and natural flow. The lightness of touch and open brushwork evoke the still heat of a summer afternoon, as if painted directly from a shaded vantage point overlooking the valley.
Executed on sketchbook paper with visible graphite underdrawing, this piece reflects Neveu’s training in both precision and intuition. Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
