Description: A striking Parisian watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), depicting the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral on the Île de la Cité, viewed from across the River Seine. The artist’s masterful balance of ink line and fluid watercolour captures the architectural majesty and atmospheric light of central Paris with refined restraint.
Neveu’s brushwork conveys both structure and spontaneity — the cathedral’s famous twin towers and flying buttresses are rendered with delicate precision, while the water and sky shimmer with loose, translucent washes of blue and violet. The scene evokes the timeless harmony of Parisian architecture and river life, a recurring motif in Neveu’s practice.
Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, later serving as Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. A frequent exhibitor at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, he was awarded the Gold Medal in 1994. His work bridges modernist line drawing with the lyricism of post-war French landscape painting, celebrated for its clarity, restraint, and sense of place.
