Description: A vibrant and atmospheric Paris watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929) depicting the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral from across the River Seine. The composition captures one of the most recognisable views in the city — the cathedral’s twin towers and spire framed by trees and bridges under a soft blue and violet sky.
Neveu’s confident use of watercolour and ink creates a balance between structure and spontaneity. The ink line defines architectural precision, while fluid washes of green, blue, and lilac suggest reflection and movement along the water’s surface. Subtle tonal variation across the sky and river gives the piece an almost musical rhythm, characteristic of Neveu’s best Parisian works.
Pierre Neveu studied at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, later becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited widely at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded the Gold Medal in 1994. His works are celebrated for their lyrical architectural perspective and ability to evoke atmosphere through economy of line and tone.
