Description: This elegant Parisian river scene by Pierre Neveu captures a shimmering view of the Seine with the unmistakable silhouette of Notre Dame Cathedral rising above the treeline. Painted with fluid washes of cobalt, ultramarine, and soft grey-green, the scene evokes the airy luminosity of a warm day in the heart of Paris. Neveu’s masterful handling of watercolor is especially evident in the treatment of the river: patches of broken, dancing blue reflect sky and shadow, giving the water movement and depth without overworking the surface.
The cathedral—recognisable by its twin towers and flying buttresses—is rendered loosely but with enough clarity to anchor the composition. A stone bridge arcs gently across the left portion of the painting, enhancing the sense of place and inviting the viewer to step into the city’s quiet, timeless rhythm. Trees along the Île de la Cité add soft organic forms against the geometry of the historic architecture. The lower portion of the paper is left minimally worked, a characteristic feature in many of Neveu’s studies, emphasising spontaneity and directing focus toward the upper half’s architectural energy.
Neveu, who trained at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts, is widely admired for his ability to translate complex cityscapes into expressive, atmospheric compositions.
