Medium: Watercolour on paper, unframed
Size (H x W): 9.5 x 9.5 inches
Condition: Good overall. Vibrant colour and clear definition with slight surface wear consistent with age.
Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: Paris Street Scene with Red Umbrella evokes the romantic pulse of the French capital at night, blending architectural grandeur with human intrigue — a hallmark of Pierre Neveu’s (b.1929) distinctive watercolour style. Though unsigned, the composition carries Neveu’s characteristic dynamism and sensitivity to light.
The scene is believed to depict a Parisian square, possibly near the Opéra Garnier or Place de la Madeleine, where lamplight and theatre façades illuminate the evening crowd. A solitary woman stands in the foreground beneath a vivid red umbrella, her presence lending a cinematic sense of mystery and reflection.
Neveu, trained at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts, later served as Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. His watercolours often balance urban structure with painterly spontaneity, merging precision and emotion in equal measure.
A moody and atmospheric study of Parisian life — rich in tone, narrative, and compositional rhythm — exemplifying Neveu’s ability to capture both the architecture and the poetry of the city.
A beautifully observed and atmospheric study, likely created during the artist’s mid-century teaching period, revealing the instinctive grace and rhythm characteristic of Neveu’s finest work.

About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. He moved to other cities later where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès...
