Description: A sunlit southern French café scene by Pierre Neveu (French, b. 1929), capturing the warmth and relaxed rhythm of life in Provence. Beneath crimson and yellow parasols, figures gather at café tables in the shade of tall trees and shuttered village buildings. Neveu balances bright Mediterranean tones — terracotta, ochre, lime-green shutters and violet shadows — with confident, architectural brushwork.
Executed in watercolour on paper, the composition combines lively spontaneity with structural clarity. The contrast between the translucent washes of the façades and the strong colour blocks of the umbrellas demonstrates Neveu’s control of both light and geometry. The printed plate text in the upper left (“Champs-Élysées par Pierre Neveu”) indicates the artist’s use of prepared paper stock rather than an applied inscription.
Educated at the École Boulle and later Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris, Neveu was admired for merging modernist energy with classical draftsmanship. His southern street and café views express a distinctly mid-century optimism — animated yet serene.
An appealing and atmospheric example of 20th-century French modernist watercolour, ideal for collectors of Provençal village scenes, plein-air urban studies, or mid-century French design aesthetics.
