About the Item
Title: Provence Farmhouse Terracotta Roof Trees and Summer Light Watercolour Study
Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929)
Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed
Size (H x W): 6.25 x 9.75 inches
Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and minor natural toning consistent with age.
Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: This expressive plein-air watercolour by Pierre Neveu captures the unmistakable warmth of a Provençal farmhouse set beneath a brilliant summer sky. Painted with Neveu’s characteristic looseness and speed, the work distils the atmosphere of the French countryside into a series of fresh, gestural marks.
At the centre of the composition sits a long, terracotta-roofed farmhouse, its sunlit walls softened by patches of shadow and warm reflected light. Neveu’s palette moves easily between ochres, greens, and sky blue — a combination that instantly evokes the heat and vibrancy of Southern France. A cluster of trees frames the house on all sides, their foliage rendered in spontaneous, overlapping washes that suggest both movement and depth.
The foreground is broad and open, with layered greens hinting at grazed land or a garden lawn. Neveu’s brushwork becomes looser and more abstract here, a technique that adds a sense of immediacy and avoids overworking the scene. A small outbuilding and glimpses of additional structures extend the narrative of rural life without distracting from the central subject.
What stands out most is the clarity of the light. The artist’s handling of the sky — a smooth, expansive wash with broken areas of white — conveys the brightness of a clear midsummer day, casting crisp shadows and setting the warm tones of the architecture in soft relief.
A charming study for collectors drawn to Provençal scenery, expressive watercolour, and mid-century European travel painting.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.

A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount.
A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best.
Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
